✦ Why you'll love this
✦ Kimono Description
The Merchant’s Smile is a rare and unique creation that blends heritage, artistry, and thoughtful detail into one unforgettable piece. Crafted from a thick and richly textured red-and-gold fabric, the kimono radiates warmth, strength, and prosperity, evoking the glow of firelight.
Its generous sleeves and flowing silhouette honor tradition while inviting a modern elegance.
The back design is its true centerpiece: a circular satin medallion embroidered with a smiling face and two affirmations—“Smile for all reasons” (the original embroidery) and the newly added “Smile for all seasons.” (not in the pictures yet).
This dual message is both playful and profound, a reminder that joy belongs to every chapter of life. Rose often recalls the inspiration for this motif: a sepia photograph of her grandmother beside her Chinese grandfather, whose long braid symbolized his life as a tradesman. “That braid,” she says, “was more than hair—it was lineage. It told the story of who we are.”
Carrying that vision forward, the kimono’s braid detail is made from real hair, purchased ethically from a mother and daughter who willingly contributed their own strands. Their story is now forever interwoven with Rose’s, and in gratitude, 10% of the proceeds will go directly to them.
The embroidery itself was redone several times with a hand-led machine until it reached perfection. Every curve of the smile and every stroke of the lettering has been refined, making the back design both an artwork and a testament to patience.
Disclaimer:
-
The embroidery artwork on the back has been reworked multiple times with hand-led machine embroidery for precision.
-
The messages now read: “Smile for all reasons” (existing, visible) and “Smile for all seasons” (new addition at the top).
-
The braid detail is crafted from real hair, purchased ethically with consent.
-
10% of proceeds from the kimono will go directly to the mother and daughter who contributed the braid.
Feel:
The fabric, just like it shimmers in a rustic finish, feels also better when clothes are worn beneath it. It doesn't scratch or itch, yet it wont feel as smooth as silk.
Amazing for wearing outside, on top of an outfit or as a light coat.
