✦ Why you'll love this

This kimono is a wearable masterpiece that embodies a fusion of bold modernity and rich cultural heritage. Its vibrant magenta patterns, inspired by traditional Filipino tribal weaves, tell a story of unity and resilience. The deconstructed silhouette offers an edgy, artistic statement, while hidden features like practical pockets and a bottle holder ensure functionality. Perfect for the fashion-forward individual, this piece is an invitation to celebrate culture and creativity with every wear.

✦ Kimono Description

The one-of-a-kind Gatekeeper No. 3 kimono, formed with sturdy black cotton canvas, is a remarkable transformation of a traditional Maguindanao malong into a contemporary silhouette, merging Filipino heritage with modern fashion sensibilities.

Crafted from handwoven silk strips sourced directly from Maguindanao, the garment features intricate geometric designs with a strong cultural meaning.

The black canvas with carefully placed cut-outs provides a grounded contrast that complements the purple malong patterns, creating a striking and culturally rich aesthetic.

This kimono is one of the three within the Gatekeeper series, whereas the Gatekeeper No. 2 was kept & worn internally. Each Gatekeeper kimono has been carefully crafted with the highest standards, taking over a week to craft by a single seamstress, a true master piece!

Functional details, including:

  • Two comfortable side pockets, a few hidden pockets in the hems.

Symbol Meaning "Gate":

The hand-woven silk symbol depicts a "gate" - in Maguindanao culture, a gate is more than a physical entryway; it is a profound symbol of protection, transition, and the marking of a sacred space.

Disclaimers:

Wear and Tear:

The authentic hand-woven fabric is very sensitive and depending on usage can experience snagging and laddering (loss of strands). This is part of the fabric's development and enriches the garment. Similarly to the Japanese concept of "Wabi-Sabi", we have a term called "Gamit at Ganda", in which Heirloom items like woven blankets (hinabol or abel) or traditional clothes (barong tagalog) are often treasured not just for their craftsmanship but also for the wear and tear they accumulate, symbolizing the story of the family or individual.
